Summary
Key words:
This issue of „Postępy Nauk Medycznych” (“Progress in Medicine”) is to memorize professor Antoni Gabryelewicz with his broad and profound research interest in pancreatology. All papers included into this issue are about pancreatology and have been written by researchers cooperating in the past with professor Gabryelewicz. The only original paper in this setting is about changes in serum levels of microelements in alcoholic or idiopathic pancreatitis. This work has been done by the team under direction of professor Petr Dite – a leading Czech gastroenterologist. The next 10 publications are review papers or papers showing the history of research in pancreatology. Professor Joachim Mössner is a world-wide known expert in the field of genetic mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis (CP). The paper written with his coworker Jonas Rosendahl is an excellent review of current information about this topic. Major clinical symptom of CP is an abdominal pain. The pathogenesis and methods of pain treatment in CP have been described by Grażyna Jurkowska. Japanese researchers are world-wide leaders in the field of selective intra-arterial administration of protease inhibitors and antibiotics in the treatment of acute pancreatitis (AP). This topic has been covered by the paper of Kazunori Takeda. Artur Pałasz and Marcin Kamiński have written an interesting paper about the role of stem cells in pancreas regeneration. Three review papers are about AP. Anna Andrzejewska and Jan Długosz have described the use of electron microscopy in research on the pathogenesis of AP. The next two papers, by Urszula Wereszczyńska-Siemiątkowska with Andrzej Siemiątkowski and Joanna Osada with Milena Dąbrowska, are about the disturbances in inflammatory mechanism and hemostasis as well as cellular immunity. The paper by Paweł Lampe and Katarzyna Kuśnierz is concerning current opinions in pancreas surgery. Papers of Krzysztof Celiński et al. and Jan Dzieniszewski with Andrzej Dąbrowski are related to world history of research in experimental pancreatitis as well as the history of research in the field of pancreatology carried out in Gastroenterology Department of Medical University in Bialystok, under direction of professor Antoni Gabryelewicz.
